  National Games: Kho-kho team, Srabani win medals

Odisha contended itself with one silver and one bronze medal on the fifth day of the 36th National Games in different cities of Gujarat today. State women kho-kho team won the silver medal after losing to Maharashtra 16-18 in the thrilling final at Sankardham Ground in Ahmedabad.

Olympic woman sprinter Srabani Nanda salvaged some pride for Odisha in athletics, winning the 200m bronze medal at IIT Ground in Gandhinagar today. Srabani finished third with a timing of 23.64 seconds.

Archana Suseendran (Tamil Nadu) and Hima Das (Assam) captured the gold and silver medal, clocking 23.06 and 23.61 seconds respectively. All three medalists also broke the Games Record, which had been created by Shiny Wilson in Pune in 1994.

 

Among other Odisha athletes, Susmita Tigga finished eighth in womens 3000m steeplechase, clocking 11 minutes 18.31 seconds. Pragyan Sahu put up impressive performance in womens 400m hurdles, but only to finish fourth with a timing of 59.19 seconds.

In swimming Pratyasa Ray finished fifth in women 200m backstroke, clocking 2:30.10 at Sardar Patel Swimming Complex in Rajkot. Meanwhile, Odisha women football team crushed Manipur 3-0 to register their first win in Group-A league at Transtadia, Ahmedabad. Sanjit Khora scored twice (35, 45+5) and Chandra Muduli netted once.

But Odisha women football team suffered a mini upset as they were held to a goalless draw by Assam at Shahibagh Police Stadium in Ahmedabad. Among other Odisha competitors, ace cyclist Dinesh Kumar grabbed his third gold medals for Services (SSCB), winning the omnium event with 139 points.

With addition of two medals today, the total number of medals for Odisha went up to 16, which included three gold, six silver and seven bronze. According to Odisha Olympic Association, this was the highest number of medals bagged by Odisha in the National Games, bettering the previous highest of 15 medals.
