  National Games: Swasti, Shriyanka, rowers win medals

Odisha garnered five medals on the fourth day of the 36th National Games in different cities of Gujarat today. The five medals includeed three silver and two bronze. With the addition of five medals today, the total number increased to 13, which featured three gold, four silver and six bronze.

Cycling international Swasti Singh also secured one silver medal for Odisha, finishing second in womens omnium race in Delhi with the best attempt of 126. Meenakshi (Haryana) and Khoirom Rejiya Devi (Manipur) won the gold and bronze respectively.

Omniumn event is a point-based competition that comprises four different bunch races where competitors are awarded for final rankings. The four bunch races are: 7.5km scratch race, 7.5km tempo race, elimination race and 20km point race. Rourkela girl Swasti will now move to Gandhinagar, Gujarat for road events.

 

Woman shooting international Shriyanka Sadangi won the silver medal in womens 50m rifle 3 position at Crowne Shooting Academy in Ahmedabad. The gold and bronze in this event were pocketed by Sift Kaur Samra and Anjum Moudgil (both Punjab) respectively.

Rowers continued to shine for Odisha, adding one silver and two bronze medals at Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad today to the one gold and two silver they had bagged yesterday.

The women coxed-eight team, comprising Subhashree Biswal, Sonali Swain, Ritu Kaudi, Deepika Xess, Sanjukta Dungdung, Reshma Lakra, Manisha Kispotta, Jharna Hasti and Ashmita Karketta clinched the silver medal, clocking 06:43.1 minutes.

Anshika Bharti and Sonalika Das claimed one bronze medal in womens lightweight double scull (LW2X) event with timing of 07:48.5 minutes. The other bronze medal in rowing was secured by Anshika Bharti, Sonalika Das, Arunpreet Kaur and Richael Lakra in womens quadruple sculls, clocking in 07:17.1 minutes.

In kho-kho, Odisha women team set up the gold medal match against Maharashtra after defeating Karnataka 36-24 in the semifinals at Sankardham Ground in Ahmedabad today. Odisha qualified for the semifinals by winning two matches and losing one in Group-A league. They beat Punjab 28-0 and Gujarat 18-16, but lost to Maharashtra 20-38.

In aquatics, young Odisha swimmer Mannata Mishra reached womens 200m breaststroke final before finishing eighth and last with a timing of 2:51.23 at Sardar Patel Swimming Complex in Rajkot. Divyanka Dibyajyoti Pradhan finished 14th in womens 800m freestyle. In womens 4x100m medley, Odisha team, featuring Pratyasa Ray, Mannata Mishra, Divyanka Dibyajyoti Pradhan and Anshika Aradhana Sahoo secured fifth position

Odisha continued to suffer one after another setback in athletics despite fielding a star-studded squad, featuring Olympians and National record holders. Dutee Chand, the most celebrated woman sprinter of the State failed to qualify for the 200m finals after finishing sixth in 100m yesterday.

A star-studded Odisha women hockey team, comprising four Olympians suffered a stunning 4-0 drubbing against Haryana in their second Pool-A match at Major Dhyanchand Hockey Ground in Rajkot today. Captain Rani Ramphal scored a hat-trick for Haryana. Earlier in their opening match yesterday, Odisha beat Uttar Pradesh 3-2.
