  Women Hockey World Cup: India finish joint ninth

India finished joint ninth with China in the FIH Hockey Women World Cup, defeating Japan 3-1 in their last classification match at Estadio Olimpic de Terrassa in Spain today. Vice-captain and Odisha Olympian Deep Grace Ekka scored one goal in the India win.

Earlier in their first classification match for the 9th to 16th position, India edged out Canada 3-2 in shootout after play in the regulation time ended in 1-1 draw at Estadio Olimpic de Terrassa. India had to play the classification matches after losing in their crossover match against Spain, won 1-0 at Estadio Olimpic de Terrassa to qualify for the quarterfinals.

 

Led by Goalkeeper Savita, the Indian team squandered their first opportunity to qualify for the quarterfinals as they finished third in Pool-B league, garnering two points from three matches at Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen in the Netherlands.

Indian women drew their first two matches against England and China by 1-1 identical margin, and lost the third and last one against New Zealand 3-4. Deep Grace Ekka was the only Odisha player in the Indian team.

RESULTS:
3 July 2022: India (Vandana Katariya 28-PC) drew with England (Isabella Petter 9-FG) 1-1. PoM: Petter Isabelle (England).
5 July 2022: China (Jiali Zheng 26-FG) drew with India (Vandana Katariya 45-PC) 1-1. PoM: Vandana Katariya.
7 July 2022: New Zealand (Olivia Merry 12-PC, 54-PC; Tessa Jopp 29-FG, Frances Davies 32-PC) beat India (Vandana Katariya 4-FG, Lalremsiami 44-FG, Gurjit Kaur 59-PF) 4-3. PoM: Brooke Roberts (New Zealand).
11 July 2022 (Crossover match): Spain (Marta Segu 56-FG) beat India 1-0. PoM: Oliva Georgina (Spain).
12 July 2022 (For 9-16 Positions): India (Salima Tete 57-PC) beat Canada (Madeline Secco 10-PC) 3-2 in shootout (Full time 1-1). Shoot out scorers: India 3 (Neha, Sonika, Navneet Kaur) beat Japan 2 (Natalie Sourisseau, Amanda Woodcroft). PoM: Navneet Kaur.
13 July 2022 (For 9-12 Positions): India (Navneet Kaur 29-FG, 44-FG; Deep Grace Ekka 37-PC) beat Japan (Yu Asai 19-PC) 3-1. PoM: Neha (India).
