  Asian U20 Women Volleyball: India finish seventh

Indian team, featuring two players from Odisha, finished seventh in the 21st Asian U-20 Women Volleyball Championship, which concluded in Nur Sultan, Kazakhstan today. In the thrilling match for the seventh place, India beat host Kazakhstan 3-2.

Japan emerged champions for the seventh time, defeating China 3-0 in the final. Thailand won the bronze medal, beating South Korea 3-2. India played a total of six matches in the championship, won two and lost four.

Medal opportunity eluded India as they failed to qualify for the semifinals after finishing fourth in Pool-B with one win and three losses. India suffered the three defeats against Chinese Taipei, China and Japan.

 

India registered the lone win at the league stage, defeating Uzbekistan 3-0. In the classification matches, India lost to Iran 1-3 and beat Kazakhstan 3-2. Odisha players Snehamayee Kishan and Mamali Nag represented India in this championship.

Of the two Odisha players, Snehamayee KIshan is a student of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), Bhubaneswar. Mamali is an inmate of Government Sports Hostel, Bhubaneswar.

The 12-member Indian team left for Nur Sultan from Bhubaneswar on July 1, accompanied by a team of three coaches and a physiotherapist. Volleyball Federation of India (VFI) President Prof Achyuta Samanta distributed sports kits to all the players and officials and also extended his good wishes for their success.

The selection trial and a coaching camp for the Indian team was held at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University, Bhubaneswar. Kandhamal MP, Prof Samanta, who is also the founder KIIT & KISS provided all help and support for the smooth conduct of coaching camp.

INDIAN U-20 WOMEN VOLLEYBALL TEAM: Alpna (Rajasthan), Gopik Gunasekran, Prisha Paulin (both Tamil Nadu); Sushama Shaw, Prerana Pal, Captain, Debosmita Mallick, Sathi Das, Libero (all West Bengal); Labanya Chandu (Telengana); Snehamayee KIshan, Mamali Nag (both Odisha); Aleena Biju (Kerala); Annu Devi (SAI).
Team Staff: Ashok Kumar Chhakra (Head Coach), Radhika Paruchuri, Krishana Prasad Kosari (Assistant Coaches); Gala Maitri Manish (Physiotherapist).

INDIA RESULTS:
July 4: Chinese Taipei beat India 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-15).
July 5: China beat India 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-15).
July 6: India beat Uzbekistan 3-0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-14).
July 9: Japan beat India 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-18)
July 10 (5th-8th Place): Iran beat India 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-15, 27-25)
July 11 (7th Place): India beat Kazakhstan 3-2 (16-25, 25-11, 29-27, 16-25, 16-14).
