  Bhagat settles for Canada International silver

Odisha Paralympic and World champion Pramod Bhagat settled for the mens SL3 singles silver medal in the Canada Para Badminton International Tournament, which concluded in Ottawa, Canad today. Second seed Daniel Bethell (Englad) won the gold medal, defeating top seed Bhagat in the final 21-14, 9-21, 21-15.

This was the second meeting of the year between arch rivals Bhagat and Bethell, and the second win for the latter. Earlier in the semifinals, Bhagat prevailed over Daisuke Fujihara of Japan 21-14, 17-21, 21-13. The Odisha star qualified for the semifinals by winning both of his league matches in Group A.

Bhagat started his campaign with hard-fought 7-21, 21-10, 21-19 win over Oleksandr Chyrkov of Ukrine. In his second and last league match, he beat Mathieu Thomas of France 21-14, 21-19.

India won a total of nine medals in the Canada Para Badminton International. The nine medals included two gold, one silver and six bronze. Deep Ranjan Bisoyee was the second player from Odisha to compete in this BWF Level-1 tournament. But his campaign in mens SL4 singles event ended in quafterfinals.

Bisoyee entered the quarterfinals by winning all three of his league matches in Group C. He beat third seed Rickard Nilsson (Sweden) 21-14, 30-28; Renzo Diquez Bances Morales (Peru) 21-8, 21-7 and Guillaume Gailly (France) 21-15, 21-9. But his medal hope went in vain when he lost to Marcel Adam (Germany) 18-21, 12-21.
