  Indian boys win South Asian U-18 basketball title

India continued their winning spree in the FIBA U-18 Boys South Asian Basketball Championship (Asian Championship Qualifiers) by outclassing Bangladesh 111-47 in the final round-robin game at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Cuttack today.

India with their second successive win in the three-team qualifiers will represent the South Asian Basketball Association (SABA) sub zone at the FIBA U 18 Asian Championship scheduled at Teheran, Iran from Aug 21.

Earlier in their first league match, India had mauled Maldives 154-32. The three-day championship featured a total of three league matches. In the opening match, Bangladesh beat Maldives 64-37.

 

Cuttack Mayor Subash Singh, Deputy Mayor Damayanti Majhi, OBA President Gyana Ranjan Parida and Secretary Ashok Sahu handed over the trophies at the closing ceremony.

This is the first time that an international basketball tournament took place in Odisha. Howver, no player from Odisha was able to find a place in the 11-member Indian team.

The South Asian championship was organised by Odisha Basketball Association (OBA), under the aegis of Basketball Federation of India (BFI) and Departmentment of Sports & Youth Services, Govt of Odisha.

The championship was inaugurated by Odisha Sports Minister Tusharkanti Behera, in the presence of hockey Olympian Dilip Tirkey, Olympian, Odisha Olympic Association Secretary Abhijit Paul, BFI Vice-President Ajeet Singh Rathore, OBA President Gyana Ranjan Parida and General Secretary Ashok Sahoo.

INDIA U-18 BOYS TEAM: Abhimanyu Govindarajan, Lavish, Harsh Dagar (Captain), Jaideep Rathore, Kushal Singh, Sahibjit Singh Bhullar, Abhi Joshi, Shreyansh Raj Singh, Jitendra Kumar Sharma, Udit Ravish, Lokendra Singh.
Team Staff: Vaselin Matic (Head Coach), Sushil Kumar (Manager), Mohit Bhandari (Coach), Siva Shanmuga Singh (Physio).

RESULTS:
2 June 2022 (Matach 1):
Bangladesh (Md Manik Hasan 23, Emadul Hoque 19, Noor Shariar 10) beat Maldives (Ahmed Lail Shifan 14) 64-37.
3 June 2022 (Match 2): India (Jaideep Rathore 28, Kushal Singh 24, Lokendra Singh 22, Shreyanshu Singh 17, Harsh Dagar 12, Udit Ravish 12, Lavish 11, Janmejay Singh 10) beat Maldives (Ahmed Ravyan Ibrahim 13, Ahmed Lail Shifan 9) 154-32.
4 June 2022 (Match 3): India (Kushal Singh 20, Lokendra Singh 16, Jaideep Rathore 12, Harsh Dagar 11, Udit Ravish 11, Janme Jay Singh 9) beat Bangladesh (Endadul Hoque Piash 17, Manik Hasan 11) 111-47.
