  Khelo India Women Judo League: Odisha bag 8 medals

A 26-member Odisha squad bagged a total of eight medals in the 1st Khelo India Women Judo National League & Ranking Tournament (East Zone), which was held at SAI Centre, Paltan Bazar in Guwahati, Assam from 27 to 31 August 2022. The eight medals featured three silver and five bronze.

Bandana Majhi won three medals, which included one silver in cadet category and one bronze each in junior and senior category. Other two silver medals were captured by Sonia Gamango and Laxmi Barman in sub-junior category. Arpita Kanhar and Puja Majhi secured one bronze medal each in sub-junior category, while Urmila Sahoo pocketed one bronze medal in junior category.

 

Odisha squad was accompanied by coaches Biswajit Mahari and Lopamudra Pati; manager Rupo Ranjan Pati and officials Gitanjali Panda (CEO, Odisha State Judo Association) and Kandan Murmu (Technical Secretary, Odisha State Judo Association).

The 1st Khelo India Women Judo National League & Ranking Tournament, held across four zones, is another initiative taken by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to support sports competitions for women via Khelo India, the flagship program of Government of India.

Other three zonal tournaments are scheduled to be held at: VKN Menon Stadium, Thrissur, Kerala (for South Zone) from Sept 1-5; followed by Pestle Wood School, Dehradun, Uttarakhand (for North Zone) from Sept 5-9 and Sardar Patel Sports Complex, Gujarat (for West Zone) Sept 11-15.

Organised in association with Judo Federation of India, the four zonal tournaments would be followed by a National Round at the KD Jadhav Indoor Stadium in New Delhi from October 20 to 23.

The tournament features competition in four age groups: Sub-Junior (12-15 years), Cadet (15-17 years), Junior (15-20 years) and Senior (15+ years). The Department of Sports, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, has allocated a total of Rs 1.74 crore for the conduct of the tournament, which includes prize money of Rs 48.86 lakh.
