  Deep Grace, Amit become new CWG medallist of Odisha

Hockey players Deep Grace Ekka and Amit Rohidas became the ninth and 10th sportsperson respectively from Odisha to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games (CWG), which concluded in Birmingham, EnglandĀ  today. Deep Grace and Amit also became the fifth and sixth hockey player from Odisha to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games.

Deep Grace achieved the feat as the vice-captain of the Indian Women Hockey Team that bagged the bronze medal at the 22nd edition of the quadrennial Games yesterday. Amit was part of the Indian Men Hockey Team that settled for the silver medal in Birmingham today.

 

The 10 sportspersons from Odisha have bagged a total of 15 medals for the country in Commonwealth Games till date. The 15 medals include five gold, seven silver and three bronze. The past eight CWG medalists of Odisha are: Bijay Satpathy, Prasmita Mangaraj and Katulu Ravi Kumar (all Weightlifting); Jyoto Sunita Kullu, Subhadra Pradhan, Prabodh Tirkey and Birendra Lakra (all Hockey) and Srabani Nanda (Athletics).

As many as five sportspersons from Odisha represented India in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. The other three from _ woman sprint stars Dutee Chand, Srabani Nanda and cyclist Dinesh Kumar _ failed to win any medal. Olympian Dutee and Srabani were members of the Indian women 4x100m relay team that finished fifth, clocking 43.81 seconds.

Dutee also participated in women 100m sprint, but only to bow out early, finishing fourth in Heat-5 with a timing of 11.55 seconds. Overall, she finished 27th in a field of 48 competitors. Cyclist Dinesh Kumar crashed out from the qualifying stage in men 4000m individual pursuit, finishing 19th on July 30.

Dutee and Dinesh joined the list of 13 sportspersons from Odisha who participated in the Commonwealth Games but could not win any medal.

6. Prabodh Tirkey (Hockey): 1 Silver, New Delhi, India, 2010.
7. Srabani Nanda (Athletics): 1 Bronze, New Delhi, India, 2010.
8. Birendra Lakra (Hockey): 1 Silver, Glasgow, Scotland, 2014.
