CWG Hockey: Mauled by Aussies, Indian Men settle for silver
08 Aug 2022

Indian Men Hockey Team settled for silver medal in the 22nd Commonwealth Games after suffering an embarrassing 7-0 drubbing at the hands of defending champions Australia in the lop-sided final at the University of Birmingham Hockey and Squash Centre in Birmingham today.

This was the third silver medal for India at the Commonwealth Games since the game was introduced in 1998. India had won the previous two silver medals in 2010 Delhi and 2014 Glasgow Games, losing both the finals to Australia by big margin (0-8 and 0-4 respectively).

On the other hand, Australia men maintained their absolute supremacy in the CWG hockey competition, winning the gold medal in all seven editions from 1998 to 2022. In the final match today was so much lop-sided that India could not create a singles penalty corner in its favour, let alone scoring a goal.

The humiliating defeat was an anti-climax for the Indian men, who put up impressive performance enroute to the final, winning four matches and drawing one. Placed in Pool B, India beat Ghana 11-0, Canada 8-0, Wales 4-1 and drew with host England 4-4 in their four league matches and then prevailed over South Africa 3-2 in the semifinals.

Mid-fieldeder Manpreet Singh led the Indian Men Team with Harmanpreet Singh as his deputy. The Indian team featured one player from Odisha. He was defender Amit Rohidas.

Indian men hockey team had won two silver medals in the history of Commonwealth Games. In the last Commonwealth Games (2018) in Gold Coast, India had finished fourth.
