  Indian Junior Women Hockey Team wins silver medal

Indian Junior Women Hockey Team, featuring four players from Odisha, settled for the silver medal in the Uniphar U-23 Five-Nations Tournament after going down to the Netherlands 1-4 in the final at the UCD Dublin, Ireland today. The Indian side was unbeaten during the group stage of the competition.

Odisha players were: forward Dipi Monika Toppo, mid-fielders Jyoti Chhatri, Nikita Toppo and forward Mamita Oram. All the four Odisha players are inmates of Odisha Naval Tata Hockey HPC.

Led by Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke, India reached the final by winning three matches and drawing one at the group stage. They opened their campaign with a 4-1 victory over hosts Ireland on June 20.

 

In their second match, India rallied from behind to earn a 2-2 draw against a tenacious Netherlands. India defeated Ukraine 3-0 in their third game before finishing the league round of the tournament with a convincing 4-1 victory over the much-fancied United States of America.

Midfielders: Manju Chorsiya, Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke (Captain), Jyoti Chhatri, Hina Bano, Nikita Toppo, Ashwini Kolekar, Rutaja Dadaso Pisal. Forwards: Annu, Beauty Dungdung, Mumtaz Khan (Vice-Captain), Deepika Soreng, Dipi Monika Toppo, Mudugula Bhavani. Coach: Erik Wonink.

19 June 2022:
India (Annu 12, Deepika Soreng 25, Monika Dipi Toppo 45, Beauty Dungdung 47) beat Ireland (Mikayla Power 19) 4-1.
20 June 2022: India (Annu 19, Beauty Dungdung 37) drew with Netherlands (Brouwer Amber 13, Van Der Broek Belen 17) 2-2.
22 June 2022: India (Nikita Toppo 33, Manju Chorsiya 44, Beauty Dungdung 55) beat Ukraine 3-0.
23 June 2022: India (Annu 49, 52; Nikita Toppo 48, Vaishnavi Phalke 58) beat USA (Hannah Miller 46-PC) 4-1.
26 June 2022 (Final): India (Beauty Dungdung 29-PC) lost to Netherlands (Belen Van Der Broek 26-PC, Amber Brouwer 31-PC, Emma Santbrink 53, Sanne Hak 55) 1-4.
