IGP-4: Srabani, Amiya clinch 100m double for Odisha
24 May 2022

Olympian Srabani Nanda and National record holder Amiya Kumar Mallick clinched a coveted double for host Odisha, winning the women and men 100m title respectively in the Indian Grand Prix-4 Athletics Competition at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar today.

Running her first 100m in around a year, Srabani won the race comfortably with a timing of 11.87 seconds. This was the second IGP title within a week for the Odisha sprinter, who had won the 200m event at the IGP-3 at the iconic Kalinga Stadium earlier on May 21.

In mens 100m sprint, Amiya Mallick too scripted a convincing win, clocking 10.74 seconds. His junior Statemate Aryan Ekka made it 1-2 for Odisha, finishing second with a timing of 10.86 seconds. It was role reversal for Mallick and Ekka who had claimed the 200m third and second position respectively at the IGP-3.

Overall, Odisha athletes bagged two titles, two second positions and one third place at the IGP-4. Two more Odisha athletes, who secured any position were: middle-distance runner Namita Pradhan and long-jumper Lalu Prasad Bhoi.

Pradhan secured second position in women 1500m run, clocking 4:59.09 seconds, while Bhoi finished third in men long jump. A trainee of Odisha Reliance Foundation Athletics HPC, Bhoi also qualified for the 2022 World Athletics U-20 Championships with a Personal Best of 7.58m.

Among other notable achievers of IGP-4, Kerala athlete Nayana James produced two efforts over 6.37m to win the high-profile women long-jump title. Muhammed Anees Yahiya emerged as the Best Male Athlete while Parul Chaudhary won the Best Female Athlete award.

Two young javelin throwers, Yashvir Singh (Rajasthan) and Rohit Yadav (Uttar Pradesh) breaching the 80m mark was another notable feature of the IGP-4. Yashvir won the title with an effort of 82.13m. The 20-year-old thus became only the 12th Indian to send the spear over 80m.
