  KIUG: Dutee wins 2nd medal; Swadhin gets silver

Odisha woman sprint star Dutee Chand won her second medal in the ongoing 2nd Khelo India University Games (KIUG) when she settled with the 200 metre silver for Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bengaluru today.

Double Olympian Dutee, who retained the 100m gold medal earlier on April 30, finished second with a timing of 24.02 seconds. Priya Mohan of host Jain University beat Dutee to grab the gold medals, clocking 23.90 seconds, while Florence Barla (24.13s) of Ranchi University settled for bronze.

 

Odisha athletes captured two medals in the day with young high jumper Swadhin Majhi bagging silver in men high jump for Sambalpur University. A trainee of Bhubaneswar-based Odisha Reliance Foundation Athletics High Performance Centre, Majhi finished second with an effort of 2.04 metre.

D Deva Karthik (University of Madras, 2.08m) and Peda Srikakolapu (Acharya Nagarjuna University, 2.00m) won the gold and bronze respectively.

With two medals today, the total number of Odisha universities increased to 11, which include two gold, seven silver and two bronze. Sambalpur University became the fourth university from Odisha to win a medal in the ongoing KIUG.

KIIT Deemed to be University continued to be the most successful from Odisha, garnering six medals (2 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze) so far. Among other Odisha universities, Utkal has captured two silver, while Berhampur secured one silver.

Odisha woman athlete Pragyan Prasanti Saho won one silver in 400m hurdles, but she represented Lovely Professional University, Phagwara, Punjab. Jain University remained at the top of the medal tally with a total of 30 medals, which include 19 gold, six silver and five bronze.
