  Sub-jr Men Hockey Natl: Odisha settle for bronze

Hockey Association of Odisha (HAO) won the bronze medal in the 12th Hockey India Sub-Junior Men National Championship, defeating Hockey Haryana 5-2 in the 3rd/4th-place match at Pedem Sports Complex in Mapusa, Goa today. Uttar Pradesh Hockey emerged champions beating Hockey Jharkhand 3-0 in the final.

The unbeaten journey of HAO ended in the semifinals yesterday as they went down fighting to defending champions Hockey Jharkhand 3-1 in shootout after the scores were tied 1-1 at the end of the regulation 60 minutes.

HAO reached the last-four stage, getting the better of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu Hockey 2-0 in the quarter-finals. HAO stormed into the quarterfinals, winning all three of their Pool-E league matches by big margins. They thrashed Kerala Hockey 14-0, Hockey Andhra Pradesh 18-0 and Hockey Mizoram 6-0.

 

Arbin Toppo led the 18-member Odisha team, which was announced by HOA earlier on May 1. HOA president and Olympian Dilip Kumar Tirkey and State Sports Department Joint-Secretary S Jena wished all success to the team during a photo shoot session in Kalinga Hockey Stadium earlier on April 30. A total of 29 teams participated in this championship.

9 May 2022: Hockey Association of Odisha (Aryan Xess 6-FG, Yojin Minz 15-FG, Sanjit Tirkey 17-PC, Irengbam Rohit Singh 24-PC, Deonath Nanwar 43-FG, Shrishail Mahesh More 45-FG) beat Hockey Mizoram 6-0.
12 May 2022 (QFs): Hockey Association of Odisha (Bilkan Oram 13-FG, Irengbam Rohit Singh 34-FG) beat Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu Hockey 2-0.
14 May 2022 (SFs): Hockey Jharkhand (Abhishek Tigga 39-FG) beat Hockey Association of Odisha (Sanjit Tirkehy 38-FG) 3-1 in shootout (Regulation time 1-1 draw). Shooout scorers: Jharkhand 3 (Rohit Tirkey, Asim Ekka, Abhishek Tigga)-Odisha 1 (Arbin Toppo).
15 May 2022 (3rd/4th-place match): Hockey Association of Odisha (Aryan Xess 7-FG, Ricky Tonjam 19-PC, Irengbam Rohit Singh 22-FG, 37-FG; Sanjit Tirkey 24-PC) bear Hockey Haryana (Ravi 28-FG, Bittu 50-PS) 5-2.
