  George, Hooda clinch Odisha Open singles titles

Asserting their supremacy, Indian shuttlers bagged three out of five titles in the Odisha Open 2022, a Badminton World Federation (BWF) Tour Super 100 Tournament, which concluded at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Cuttack, today.

Among the Indian title winners, Kiran George and Unnati Hooda emerged men and women singles champions respectively, while the women doubles title was pocketed by Gayathri Gopichand Pullela and Treesa Jolly.

For 14-year-old Unnati Hooda, this was her maiden Super 100 title and she bagged it, defeating compatriot Smit Toshniwal in the final 21-18, 21-11. Kiran George claimed the mens single, overcoming compatriot Priyanshu Rajawat 21-15, 21-14, 21-18.

 

Sri Lankan pair of Sachin Dias and Thilini Hendahewa won the mixed doubles title, defeating the Indian pair MR Arjun and Treesa Jolly 21-16, 22-20. Gayathri Gopichand Pullela and Treesa Jolly cruised to the womens double title, getting the better of Sanyogita Ghorpade and Shruti Mishra 21-12, 21-10. Malaysian pair Nur Mohd and Lim KW won the mens doubles title, defeating Indian pair PS Ravikrishna and Sankar Prasad Udayakumar 18-21, 21-14, 21-16.

The medal winners were felicitated by Odisha Sports Department Secretary R Vineel Krishna, Badminton Association of India (BAI) General Secretary Ajay K Singhania, Dalmia Bharat Limited Managing Director Puneet Dalmia, Cuttack Collector Bhabani Shankar Chayani, Cuttack DCP Prateek Singh and BAI Observer Rajinder Sharma.

Odisha Sports Secretary R Vineel Krishna said, "This is the first time Odisha hosted an international badminton tournament. It will be an annual event and next year we hope to host it at a larger scale."
