  Jr Women Natl Hockey: Odisha win bronze medal

Hockey Association of Odisha (HAO) won the bronze medal in the 12th Hockey India Junior Women National Championship, defeating Hockey Maharashtra 4-0 in the 3rd/4th place match in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh today. Earlier, Hockey Association of Odisha (HAO) went down fighting to Hockey Haryana 1-2 in the semifinals on April 2.

HAO reached semifinals, defeating Hockey Chandigarh 2-1, via penalty shootout, after the teams were locked 0-0 at the end of regular time in their quarter-final match in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh on March 31.

Jyoti Chhatri and Munmuni Das scored for HAO during the shootout whereas goalkeeper Namsi Jarika was the star with four saves. Gurmail Kaur scored the only goal for Hockey Chandigarh in the shootout.

HAO advanced to the quarterfinals beating Delhi Hockey 3-1 in their second and last league match at Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh on March 28. Earlier in their opening Pool-E match, HAO trounced Kerala Hockey 7-0. Munmuni Das was the top scorer for Odisha with a hat-trick (three field goals).

Assam girl Munmuni, who hails from Tinsukia and trains at Naval Tata Hockey High Performance Centre in Bhubaneswar, scored the three goals in the 21st, 22nd and 48th minutes. Among other goal-getters, Kamla Singh scored a brace (17th, 60th), while, Sunita Xaxa (5th) and Jyoti Chhatri (53rd) sounded the board once each.

 

Jyoti Chhatri led the 18-member HOA team, which was accompanied by Sujit Lakra and Shaikh Abdul Rab as coach and manager respectively.

March 26:
Hockey Association of Odisha (Sunita Xaxa 5-FG, Kamla Singh 17-PC, 60-FG; Munmuni Das 21-FG, 22-FG, 48-FG; Jyoti Chhatri 53-FG) beat Kerala Hockey 7-0.
March 28: Hockey Association of Odisha (Munmuni Das 8-PC, Sunita Xaxa 11-FG, 17-PC) beat Delhi Hockey (Divya 3-FG) 3-1.
March 31 (Quarter-finals): Hockey Association of Odisha beat Hockey Chandigarh 2-1 via shootout. Regulation time 0-0 (Jhyoti Chhatri and Munmuni Das scored for HAO in the shootout).
April 2 (Semifinals): Hockey Association of Odisha (Nikita Toppo 41-PC) lost to Hockey Haryana (Sakshi Rana 15-PC, Seema (54-FG) 1-2.
April 3 (3rd/4th place): Hockey Association of Odisha (Nikita Toppo 31-PC, 41-PC; Munmuni Das 47-FG, Sumi Mundari 50-FG) beat Hockey Maharashtra 4-0.
