  Women Junior Hockey World Cup: India finish fourth

India finished fourth in the Women Junior Hockey World Cup by losing to England 0-3 in shootout after play in the regulation time of their bronze medal match ended in 2-2 draw in Potchefstroom, South Africa today.

With this win, England not only claimed the bronze medal, but also avenged the identical defeat they had suffered in the bronze-medal match against India in the 2013 edition of the quadriennial competition.

India played the bronze-medal match in the current edition after going down 0-3 to the Netherlands in the semifinals on April 10. The heart-breaking loss to England means India would have to wait for another four years for the second medal in the Women Junior World Cup.
 

Before their defeat in the semifinals, India were flying high, registering four wins in a row. They beat Wales 5-1, Germany 2-1 and Malaysia 4-0 to emerge toppers in Pool-D and qualified for the quarterfinals, where they trounced Korea 3-0.

The 20-member Indian Junior Women Team was led by Salima Tete with Ishika Chaudhary as her deputy. Two players from Odisha represented India in this World Cup. They were: mid-fielder Ajmina Kujur and forward Jiwan Kishori Toppo.

The best show of the Indian Junior Women team in the FIH Junior Womens World Cup in 2013 when they finished on the podium with a bronze medal, beating nemesis England in a shootout.

April 2: India (Lalremsiami 3-FG, Lalrindiki 31-FG, 56-PC; Mumtaz Khan 40-FG, Deepika 57-PC) beat Wales (Millie Holme 25-FG) 5-1.
April 3: India (Lalremsiami 2-PC, Mumtaz Khan 25-PC) beat Germany (Jule Bleuel 57-FG) 2-1. PoM: Bichu Devi Kharibam.
April 5: India (Mumtaz Khan 10-FG, 26-FG, 59-FG; Santiga Kumari 11-FG) beat Malaysia 4-0.
April 8 (Quarterfinals): India (Mumtaz Khan 11-PC, Lalrindiki 15-FG, Sangita Kumari 41-FG) beat Korea 3-0.
April 10 (Semifinal): India lost to Netherlands (Tessa Beetsma 12-FG, Luna Fokke 53-FG, Jip Dicke (54-FG) 0-3.
April 12 (3rd/4th place): India (Mumtaz Khan 21-FG, 47-FG) lost to England (Millie Giglio 18-FG, Claudia Swain 58-FG) 0-3 in Shootout (Regulation time 2-2 draw). Shootout scorers: Katie Curtis, Claudia Swain, Maddie Axford (all England). PoM: Maddie Axford (ENG).
