  Jr Hockey World Cup: Argentina champions; India 4th

Argentina regained Junior Men Hockey World Cup title after a gap of 16 years, beating six-time champions Germany 4-2 in the well-contested final at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium in Bhubaneswar today. Lautaro Domene scored a hat-trick of penalty corners to help Argentina win the Junior World Cup for the second time. Argentina had won their first title in Rotterdam in 2005.

Domene converted was bang on target in converting the three penalty corners Argentina earned in the match. He was rightly adjudged the Player of the Match. Argentina goalkeeper Nehuen Hernando also put up outstanding performance for his team, pulling off some astonishing saves towards the fag end of the match.

 

A 10-minute yellow card suspention to Julius Heyner cost Germany dear in the first half. Though Germany leveled the score through Heyner and Masi Phandt, Argentina scored twice in the last quarter to emerge champions. With Germany having replaced their goalkeeper with an outfield player in a final attempt to salvage the situation, Franco Agostini fired into an empty net to score the fourth goal for Argentina in the final minute.

Earlier in the day, riding on a brilliant hat-trick by captain and Player of the Tournament Timothee Clement, France defeated India 3-1 to claim the bronze medal. This was the fourth hat-trick in six matches of the tournament for Clement, who also bagged the Player of the Match award. The consolation goal for India was scored by Odisha forward Sudeep Chirmako.

Netherlands secured the fifth place in the final rankings, getting the better of last-edition silver medallist Belgium 6-4. Drag-flick specialist Miles Bukkens starred in the Natherlands win, scoring three goals. This was the fourth hat-trick of the tournament for 17-year-old Bukkens, who also won the award as the Top Scorer of the Tournament with 18 goals to his name.

Spain finished seventh in the tournament with a 4-1 win over Malaysia. After conceding an early lead, Spain fought back to win the match, thanks to a brace by Pau Cunill. Due to rain, the start of this match was delayed for over 40 minutes.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik graced the closing ceremony and presented the Junior World Cup trophy to the Argentina Team. International Hockey Federation President Dr Narinder Dhruv Batra and Odisha Sports Minister Tusharkanti Behera were present on the occasion.

Match 45 (7th/8th Place): Spain (Eduard De Ignacio Simo 7-FG, Pau Cunill 49-PC, 58-PC; Pepe Cunill 55-PC) beat Malaysia (Akhimullah Anuar 4-FG) 4-1. Player of the Match: Pepe Cunill (ESP).

Match 46 (5th/6th Place): Netherlands (Miles Bukkens 8-FG, 20-PC, 27-PC; Brent van Bijnen 15-FG, Guus Jansen 39-PC, Casper van der Veen 50-FG) beat Belgium (Thibault Delpus 25-PC, Roman Duvekot 36-FG, 38-FG; Jeff De Winter 52-PS) 6-4. Player of the Match: Guus Jansen (NED).

Match 47 (3rd/4th Place): France (Timothee Clement 26-PC, 34-PC, 47-PC) beat India (Sudeep Chirmako 42-FG) 3-1. Player of the Match: Timothee Clement (FRA).

Match 48 (Final): Argentina (Lautaro Domene 10-PC, 25-PC, 50-PC; Franco Agostini 60-FG) beat Germany (Julius Hayner 36-FG, Masi Pfandt 47-PC) 4-2. Player of the Match: Lautaro Domene (ARG).
