  Hockey Women Asia Cup: India settles for bronze

Defending champions India settled for bronze medal in the Womens Asia Cup Hockey Tournament, beating Chine 2-0 in the 3rd/4th-place match at Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat today. India played the bronze-medal match after suffering a 2-3 defeat in the semifinals against South Korea earlier on January 22.

Japan emerged champions for the third time, defeating South Korea 4-2 in the final. Japan had won their earlier two titles in 2007 and 2013. India marched into the semifinals, trouncing Singapore 9-1 in their third and last Pool-A match earlier on January 24.

 

In their first two matches, India hammered Malaysia 9-0, but lost to Asian Games gold medallist Japan 0-2. The 18-member Indian team featured two players from Odisha _ defender Deep Grace Ekka and forward Mariana Kujur. Ace goalkeeper led the team, in the absence of Rani who was undergoing rehabilitation in Bengaluru.

Deep Grace Ekka was the vice-captain of the Indian team which featured a formidable lineup with 16 players who were part of the historic fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020.

Top four-teams from this tournament will qualified for the 2022 FIH Womens Hockey World Cup to be held in Spain and Netherlands. In the previous edition held in 2017, India beat China 5-4 in a tense shootout to lift the title.

Midfielders: Nisha, Sushila Chanu, Monika, Neha, Salima Tete, Jyoti, Navjot Kaur. Forwards: Navneet Kaur, Lalremsiami, Vandana Katariya, Mariana Kujur, Sharmila Devi. Chief Coach: Janneke Schopman.

January 21:
India (Vandana Katariya 8-FG, 34-FG; Deep Grace Ekka 10-PC, Navneet Kaur 15-FG, 27-FG; Lalremsiami 38-FG, Monika 40-FG, Sharmila Devi 46-FG, 59-FG) beat Malaysia 9-0.
January 23: India lost to Japan (Yuri Nagai 2-FG, Saki Tanaka 42-FG) 0-2.
January 24: India (Minika 6-FG, 17-PC; Vandana Katariya 8-FG, Gurjit Kaur 8-PC, 37-PC, 48-PC; Mariana Kujur 10-FG, Jyoti 43-FG, 58-FG) beat Singapore (Li Min Toh 43-PC) 9-1.
January 26 (2nd Semifinal): India (Neha 28-PC, Lalremsiami 54-FG) lost to South Korea (Eunbi Cheon 31-PC, Seung Ju Lee 45-FG, Hyejin Cho 47-FG) 2-3.
January 28 (3/4 Place): India (Sharmila Devi 13-PC, Gurjit Kaur 19-PC) beat China 2-0.
