12 Nov 2021

Sambalpur boy Ishan Kumar Pradhan made Odisha proud by securing silver medal in +66 kg category of the National Sub-junior Judo Championship at Chandigarh University Sports Complex in Punjab today. The championship was organised by Punjab Judo Association, under the aegis of Judo Federation of India from November 5.

After getting bye in the opening bout, Pradhan beat his opponents from Chhattisgarh, Delhi and Maharashtra to reach the final where he lost to an opponent from Bihar. Pradhan is the son of Jitendra Kumar Pradhan and Sangita Pradhan.

Due to Covid-19 pandemic, Odisha State Judo Association (OSJA) fielded a small three-member squad in the National Sub-junior Judo Championship. Other two judokas of the squad were: Debasini Ping (KISS) and Maisa Nayan (Bhubaneswar).

Putting up good performance in girls -40 kg and -57 kg categories respectively, Debasini and Maisa narrowly missed bronze medal. Biswajit Mahari accompanied the squad as coach-cum-manager.

Before their participation in the National championship, all three judokas prepared well at a two-month-long coaching camp, which was jointly organised by OSJA and the Department of Sports & Youth Services, Government of Odisha at KIIT, Bhubaneswar.

OSJA Secretary Purno Chandra Mishra and CEO Gitanjali Panda thanked the State Government for the support and congratulated Pradhan for winning a National medal after a long gap.
