India win silver at U-18 Girls Asia Rugby 7s Meet
19 Sep 2021

India won the silver medal in the Asia U-18 Girls Rugby 7s Championships, which was held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on 18 and 19 September 2021. Indian girls settled for the silver medal after suffering a 17-21 defeat against host United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the final today.

A total of five countries participated in the championship. Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan were other three nations in the fray. The Indian Girls Team, featuring three players from Odisha, finished third in the round-robin league with two wins and two defeats to qualify for the semifinals. India beat Kazakhstan 24-7 in the semifinal to storm into the gold medal match (Final).

Indian girls started their campaign on a schocking note as they lost to Kazakhstan 10-12 in their opening match. But the never-say-die Indian team bounced back into the race for the semifinal spot, beating Kyrgyzstan 63-0 and Uzbekistan 20-5 in their remaining two league games.

India went down to UAE in their fourth and last league game 12-29. But the defeat to UAE could not stop India from booking berth in the semifinals. The three Odisha players in the Indian team were: Tarulata Naik, Mama Nayak and Nirmalya Rout. All these three players belong to Kalinga Institute of Industrial Institute, Bhubaneswar.
