Negre cites Bhubaneswar as possible World Cup venue
13 Dec 2014 BHUBANESWAR

International Hockey Federation (FIH) president is impressed with the facilities at Kalinga Stadium Hockey Complex and prefers Bhubaneswar as a possible venue for the 2018 World Cup. In a press conference here today, Negre spoke on different issues related to hockey. Excerpts:

On novelties for 2018 World Cup: Since the number of participating teams would increase from 12 to 16 in the next edition, it would be better to hold the World Cup at two venues. We are pushing India to run the World Cup at two different venues. The main idea is to take hockey to the spectators and make it more popular. But Hockey India has to agree to this.

On Bhubaneswar as World Cup venue: Bhubaneswar has nice infrastructure facility. It hosted the Champions Trophy successfully. The hospitality was good and the crowed very supportive. The city can be possible venue for World Cup. Mohali is also a possible venue. A final decision would be taken in November, 2015.

On format change for Champions Trophy: There will be no change in the present eight-team format, as it gives more teams a chance to participate in the elite event. I am also in favour of all participating teams qualifying for the quarterfinals as it adds an element of surprise to the tournament.

On frequent rule changes: These were necessary to make the sport more attractive. The sport must adapt to the demands of broadcasters in order to make an impact on television. STAR Sports says it is crazy to have six matches a day. We can have two pools of four teams in each of the two cities.
