Com Police win title in A-Division Football League
01 Oct 2014 BHUBANESWAR

Commissionerate Police emerged champions in the 11th Gatikrushna Memorial A-Division Football League, edging out Unit-VI Athletic Association 4-3, via penalty shoot out, in the violence-marred final here at Unit-I Govt Boys` High School ground today.

Play in the regulation time ended in goalless draw as both the teams squandered lots of scoring opportunities. In the tie-breaker, Sukadev Murmu, Basant Kumar Swain, Hrusikesh Behera and Khiradhar Soy scored for the champions, while Ranjit Jena, Asish Pradhan and Rameswar Parhi found the target for the runners-up.

The hard-fought final, however, was marred due to rough play, especially by the police side, referee`s debatable decisions and crowd violence. Towards the fag end of the game, police right-winger Mohammad Ehesan Khan`s dangerous play enraged the crowd, which hurled abuses on him.

But instead of focusing on the game, Khan retaliated by pushing and shoving a couple of unruly onlookers. Tension mounted as Khan was joined by other police players and officials. However, timely intervention by officials of Bhubaneswar Athletic Association (BAA), brought the situation under control.

Bishnu Prasad Panda, son of Late Gatikrushna Panda, handed over the trophies at the presentation ceremony. BAA president Suresh Kumar Routray and secretary Dr S R Parija were present on the occasion.

Bhubaneswar Athletic Association organised the tournament from September 17 with a total of eight teams in the fray. Teams played league matches after being divided into two groups and after completion of group league, top two from each group qualified for semifinals.
