  Prakruti, Rudra, Sunyasakta, Sidhant triumph

Prakruti Rout (Cuttack), Rudranarayan (Puri), Sunyasakta Satpathy (Khurda) and Sidhant Mohapatra (Bhadrak) won titles in the Odisha State Under-9 and Under-19 Chess Championships, which concluded here at Srusti Academy of Management today.

Prakruti emerged champion in under-9 girls category with 5.5 points each out of a possible seven. There was a three-way tie for the top slot with top seed Aditi Mohanty and Adhisha Das (all Cuttack) also logging 5.5 points each. Eventually second seed Prukruti claimed the crown on Buchholz tie-break score, while Aditi settled as runner-up.

 

Second seed Rudranarayan claimed the under-9 open crown, his maiden state title, without losing a game. In the nine-round competition, he won eight and drew one to finish at the top of the table with 8.5 points. Mahitosh Dey (Khurda) settled as runner-up with 7.5 points.

Top seed Sunyasakta grabbed the under-19 girls title, pipping second seed Smaraki Mohanty (Kendrapara) on Buchholz tie-break method after both the players tied for the top spot, garnering 4.5 points in the five-round competition.

In the under-19 category, a last-round draw against Ashirwad Swain was enough for international medallist Sidhant to clinch the title with 7.5 points out of a possible nine. Rajesh Nayak upset second seed Mohammad Ashraf in the last round to end as runner-up

Title winners in each of the four categories received a cash prize of Rs 1,500. DAV School (Chandrasekharpur) principal Dr KC Satapathy handed over the trophies at the closing function. All Odisha Chess Association secretary Vivek Kumar Tibarewal and host Srusti Academy of Management director Prof Gangadhar Mishra were present on the occasion.

Top two finishers in both the girls` groups qualified to represent Odisha in respective National championships, scheduled to be held at Puducherry from May 20 to 28. The top four finishers in the two open categories will turn out for Odisha in the National u-9 and u-19 championships to be held at Pune from July 12 to 20.
